The head of an investigation into claims that Russia ran a state-sponsored programme of sports doping has said that more than 1,000 athletes were involved in a systematic conspiracy.

Professor Richard McLaren published an initial report earlier this year that led to more than 100 Russian athletes being barred from competing in the Rio Olympics.

He said the doping programme was at its height at the 2012 Olympics in London where Russia won 24 gold medals.
