The police told Mirror Online that they thought the property was vacant and forced entry after getting a report for conspiracy to burgle.

Stormzy is among those nominated for British Breakthrough Artist at this year’s Brit awards.

"Police were called to an address in West Brompton at 00:55hrs on Tuesday 14th February to a report of a conspiracy to burgle a ground floor flat, believed to have been vacant," a police rep said in a statement.

The Grime star shared a picture of his broken door on Twitter and quickly went viral as fans rushed to support him.

Stormzy's fans were outraged by what happened, with one telling him: "Use ya popularity to make an example of em."

Another said: "I'm amazed that this is still happening smdh and saddened."

But some joked it was Stormzy's sold out 17-date UK tour that made the officers pay his home a visit, with one tweeting: "All they had to do for a pair of tickets was ask."

After friends and fans offered support on social media he said he didn't expect to see any money back from the police.

He tweeted: "Bro trust me I ain't holding my breath lol proper d***heads."

Stormzy grew up with his mother, two sisters and brother in Thornton Heath, south London.

He gained a name for himself of the underground grime scene, went on to perform on Later with Jools Holland, won two MOBOs and declared that he will be the "biggest thing to come out of Croydon".
