About Watford

Watford Herts Population

Watford town is a borough in Hertfordshire, England, situated 17 miles (27 km) northwest of central London and within the circumference of the M25 motorway. It is not to be confused with Watford (gap), Northamptonshire which is 55 miles to the north.

The borough is separated from Greater London to the south by the urbanised parish of Watford Rural in the Three Rivers District.

The Watford subdivision of the Greater London Urban Area, which includes much of the neighbouring districts.

In the 2021 census population of 102,200 is made up of approximately 50% females and 50% males. This was an increase of 13.3% compared to the figure of 90,300 from the 2011 Census.

The percentage of households including a couple with dependent children rose from 21.9% in 2011 to 23.7% in 2021.

In 2021, 24.5% of Watford residents identified their ethnic group within the “Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh” category, up from 17.9% in 2011.

The average (median) age of Watford increased by one year, from 35 to 36 years of age.

In 2021, 48.2% of Watford residents described their health as “very good”, increasing from 45.0% in 2011.

The county of Hertfordshire population in 2013 was 1,140,700, rising to 183,500 in 2011 to around 187,000 in 2021. With an average age of 48 years.

Hertfordshire County Council designates Watford, along with Stevenage, to be its major sub-regional centre. Several head offices of national companies and multinationals are based in Watford.

Both the 2016 World Golf Championship and the 2019 NATO SUMMIT took place at The Grove Hotel.

The Towns Football Team play at Vicarage Road Stadium.

The county town, Hertford, was the main market town for the medieval agricultural county and ranks 13th in population today deriving its name from a hart (stag) and a ford used as the components of the county’s coat of arms and flag.

Hertford is derived from the Anglo-Saxon heort ford, meaning deer crossing (of a watercourse).
